5 Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Windows (Now!)
Window replacement is not typically anyone’s favorite home remodeling task. But take heart: if you were living in the Buckingham Palace, you’d have to deal with an incredible 760 window replacements when the time comes to change them out.
First time homeowners may not have much experience with window replacements and understanding when it’s finally time to replace that old window. Here’s what you should keep an eye out for.
1) Drafts for Days
If, during the colder months, you can easily feel a tell-tale draft emanating from your window, it’s probably time to replace it. One reason your window can feel drafty is because the frames are old or haven’t been constructed together that well. Wooden frames expand and contract depending on the weather—over time, this can eventually lead to gaps and drafts. If your home is old, it’s also possible you own single-pane windows.
2) Aggravating Energy Bills
Is your energy bill twice as high as your neighbors? The culprit could be your poorly insulated old windows. According to Energy.gov, replacing your old windows with energy-efficient, double-paned models can save you up to 25% on your energy bills—and place less stress on your HVAC system. While most windows today are dual paned, rather than single paned, there are additional energy-saving technologies available—many windows today, for example, come with clear coatings that help control heat loss and heat gain.
3) Cracked Glass
If your window frame is cracked, it’s definitely time for an upgrade. Cracked glass compromises the structural integrity of your window, meaning it will eventually break, and when it does, you might be left with a gaping hole in the middle of winter. While you’re waiting for it to be replaced, place tape over one or both sides. This will help water from getting though and help hold the pane together in the meantime.
4) Stuck in Place
If your window won’t open, it’s a sure sign it’s time to replace it. Wooden windows can often get stuck after years of painting and re-painting, while older aluminum windows may have swollen during warmer months. Replacing windows now also makes sense if you plan to sell your home at one point down the line—homebuyers are going to buy more for windows that work and complement the rest of the home’s decor.
5) Noise, Noise, Noise
Windows receive a rating for their acoustic insulation. Windows with a higher Sound Transmission Class rating, or STC, allow much less noise in. For homeowners who live near airports, bus stations, etc., it might make sense to install windows that allow for greater sound control.
